Course Records for the Lakes Sky Ultra
2016 saw the move of the LSU to July to accommodate the Glen Coe Skyline into the World and Extreme Skyrunning series'.
This brought with it the prospect of mixed weather, but longer daylight hours. Thankfully the weather gods looked kindly on the LSU for 2016 and with it they gave is almost perfect conditions for running in the summer. High cloud cover, a slight breeze, some dramatic mists swirling in the morning and not too warm for the time of year.
Of course, this meant for great running and scrambling conditions and records were smashed.
Sarah Ridgway ran exceedingly strong in the Ladies Race to smash her own record from the year before, which was the full course minus Pinnacle Ridge, in an amazing time of 08:38:46 to set a New Course Record, taking over 35 minutes off the previous year and this was with Pinnacle Ridge in the course, plus the extra 2km and 350m of ascent for 2016.
A great record set and one certainly for other female runners to step up and try for!
Donnie Campbell dominated the Men's Race to pretty much stay in the lead from the start. Donnie has had a cracking year taking records at the Highland Fling, Keswick Mountain Festival 50k Ultra and now at the Lakes Sky Ultra 2016. Last year Eirik Haugsnes ran exceedingly strong in the conditions thrown at the competitors on the day to put in a time of 07:16:50. Donnie ran well on the day to better that time with a New Course Record of 07:30:40, which although slower in time, included the Pinnacle Ridge section of the course, plus the extra 350m of ascent and 2km more distance.
Another great record and certainly one for other male runners to step up to and try for!
Course records now stand at:
Male Open: Donnie Campbell - Time: 07:30:40
Female Open: Sarah Ridgway - Time: 08:38:46
2015 was the inaugural year. The weather has been described as some what 'Biblical', we think it was typical Lakes weather. Although September was a month of sunshine in the Lakes, apart from the 12th of Sept 2015!
Course records have been set and they are there for the breaking!
2015 Race: The men's record has been set by visiting Norwegian runner, Eirik Haugsnes, a sponsored Inov8 athlete at the time. Eirik was the winner of the Tromso Sky Race in 2014 & is prolific on the 'Sky Running' circuit in Europe. We hope he will return in 2016 to defend his record!
Men's course record: 07:16:50
2015 Race: The women's course record has been set by Sarah Ridgeway, women's Snowdon Horseshoe record holder & V3K sky race women's winner in 2015. Sarah has had a great year on the UK 'Sky Running' circuit and we hope to see her return next year to defend her record!
